USPTA CEO John Embree to Retire at End of Year
In a short video released Wednesday morning to USPTA members, USPTA CEO and Executive Director John Embree announced he’ll be retiring from the organization at the end of 2023. He has been in the position since October 2012. Embree said the USPTA Board of Directors will be hiring a search firm to find his replacement.
The announcement comes following three days of meetings this past weekend in Orlando by USPTA leadership, including the board of directors, executive directors and the executive committee.
“During these meetings, I made an announcement that I was going to step down and retire from the uspta at the end of this calendar year,” Embree said in the video.
“I want to make sure to set the record straight. This is my decision…. I’ve been in this industry 50 years. I started teaching tennis when I was in college in 1973. I started [my role at the USPTA] in October of 2012, so this will be my 11th year here. And I’ll be turning 70 in August. so it’s time for a change. Time for a change for me and time for a change for the association. Time for them to find a new and fresh perspective to lead this organization moving forward.
“And there is a succession plan. The USPTA board of directors will be hiring a search firm and will vet candidates during the summer, and hopefully a candidate will be established sometime late this fall. And I’ll certainly help them with this transition until the end of the year.”
“Please make a point of coming [to the USPTA World Conference, Sept. 24-28, in Orlando]. I look forward to seeing all of you, I look forward to thanking you for your service to the organization, and I want to express my personal appreciation for all that you do to grow tennis in your community. Thank you.”
