USPTA Reaffirms Commitment to Safe Play

LAKE NONA, Fla. (May 11, 2018) - Starting January 1, 2019, the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) will require all applicants to complete the Safe Play education modules as a part of the certification process before they can become a certified professional of the association.

Along with the addition of the 90-minute Safe Play module, USPTA Professionals must complete Coach Youth Tennis as a part of their education pre-certification requirement. The decision was approved at the USPTA Executive Committee meeting in April.

“It is important that our tennis-teaching professionals and coaches create a safe environment for all of their students,” said John Embree, USPTA CEO. “Through Safe Play training, our members will be more conscious of explicit behaviors that could be detrimental to the next generation of tennis players. We want to do everything that we can to make tennis safe for all, especially kids.”

Safe Play is the USTA’s commitment to respect and safety for every individual participating in an event or program through the use of screening, education and reporting tools. Safe Play expects individuals to adhere to Safe Play policies and standards, as well as all other policies, procedures, and practices and applicable external laws and regulations.
