Djokovic beats Murray in Madrid

May 9, 2016

Madrid/Spain — HEAD’s record-setting Novak Djokovic made more tennis history at the Madrid Masters, beating fellow Racquet Rebel Andy Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in a HEAD-2-HEAD final on the clay of the Spanish capital. The ATP No.1 who endorses the HEAD Graphene XT Speed, now leads the all-time standings of Masters 1000 titles with 29, one better than Rafael Nadal. Djokovic has won four of the last five and nine of the last 13 ATP Masters 1000 trophies.

Djokovic needed to win a dramatic 13-minute final game, with Murray fighting to save seven break points before his rival finally claimed victory on a third match point after just over two hours.

Murray, who won the title in 2015, was disappointed after the loss. “I obviously fought hard today. Both of us were pretty clinical on the breakpoints up until the last game for me. That’s why he’s No. 1 just now. He fought very hard in that game and served well when he was a bit nervous. At the end he came up with some big serves and got himself some free points and did well.”
