Groppel a highlight at conference

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC — The 2016 Tennis Owners & Managers Conference in Miami March 23-25 will feature Dr. Jack Groppel, an internationally recognized authority and pioneer in the science of human performance.

Dr. Groppel, who is the co-founder of the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute, has a long history in tennis, including 16 years as chair of the USTA’s National Sport Science Committee. He will address tennis facility owners/managers on topics that include the importance of health and fitness in helping to grow tennis and the industry.

The third annual Tennis Owners & Managers Conference (T.O.M. Conference), which is presented by the Tennis Industry Association, will bring together leading experts in facility management, programming and other key areas to provide vital information to grow tennis businesses and bring in more tennis players. Dr. Groppel will speak twice at the event. On Wednesday, March 23, he’ll present “Tennis for the Health of It: The Challenge to Change Behaviors” at 11:30 a.m. (following the opening “State of the Tennis Industry Forum”). The next day, March 24, at 9 a.m., Dr. Groppel will present to tennis facility owners/managers about becoming a “Tennis Wellness Center” and using the health and fitness benefits of the sport to get more people playing.

Dr. Groppel is the co-chair of the Global Alliance for Health & Performance and is professor of Kinesiology & Community Health at the University of Illinois. He’s addressed the issue of worksite wellness and performance at U.N. and U.S. Congress policy events, and represented the worksite wellness industry at the Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities.

Along with his Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute duties, Dr. Groppel is the co-chair of the Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO) Health, Performance & Productivity Study Committee as well as the National Spokesperson for the CEO Pledge for Physical Activity of the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity. He wrote the book “The Corporate Athlete” on achieving the pinnacle of corporate performance, and he’s been featured in the New York Times, Fortune, Forbes, Shape, Fast Company and Huffington Post, among others.

Other T.O.M. Conference speakers will include former top-ranked pro and current TV tennis announcer Cliff Drysdale, founder of Cliff Drysdale Tennis management company and a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame; Hall-of-Famer Gigi Fernandez, a former world No. 1-ranked doubles player and doubles champion at all four Grand Slams; French Open and US Open doubles winner Emilio Sanchez, also a former world No. 1-ranked doubles player and owner of Academia Sanchez-Casal-Florida; tennis industry veteran and former Tennis Industry Association (TIA) President Jim Baugh, the founder of PHIT America; and internationally known management consultant Dr. Gerald Faust, among other management and business consultants.

The T.O.M. Conference also will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about the latest products and trends and to experience interactive resources and ideas, as the event will feature a unique Tennis Tech Fair & Resource Center and an “Idea Fair” workshop.

On the morning of Wednesday, March 23, a State of the Tennis Industry Forum will be held, prior to the start of the T.O.M. Conference. The Forum is a free event, open to all in the tennis industry, however space is limited, so registration for the Forum is required at TheTOMConference.com website.
