Lloyd named coach of San Diego Aviators
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego Aviators announced today they have signed renowned tennis champion and broadcaster John Lloyd as their coach for the 2015 Mylan World TeamTennis season at Omni La Costa this summer.
Lloyd is a former British No. 1 in singles, peaking at No. 21 in the ATP Rankings and winning one singles title on the ATP World Tour. He also won three Grand Slam mixed doubles championships and was a singles finalist at the 1977 Australian Open. Lloyd previously coached for eight WTT seasons, winning WTT Coach of the Year in 1990 with the Los Angeles Strings after helping the team (as a coach and a player) to the King Trophy. More recently, he captained the British Davis Cup team from 2006 to 2010. Lloyd works for the BBC as a commentator at the four Grand Slam tennis events.
“Having a coach that has had such a successful playing career and now sees the game from a broadcaster’s vantage affords the Aviators the opportunity to have the best of both worlds,” said Aviators CEO Billy Berger. “John knows talent, but also sees the current breadth of players from around the world in real time which will help tremendously in a team format.”
The Aviators look forward to hosting elite athletes throughout Mylan WTT’s 40th season, which begins July 12 and concludes on August 2 with the Mylan WTT Finals. The Aviators’ 2015 team lineup will be determined at the Mylan WTT Player Draft on March 16 in Indian Wells, Calif. The Aviators 2014 lineup included the world’s top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan, Daniela Hantuchova, Somdev Devvarman, Kveta Peschke and Raven Klaasen.
The Aviators will host seven home matches during the 2015 regular season which runs July 12-30. The 2015 schedule will be posted in early March.
Season Tickets will go on sale in mid-March 2015. Packages will range from VIP Boxes to General Admission. Go to sandiegoaviators.com for updates. In addition to tennis, there will an interactive expo area for all ages, gourmet food and a variety of beverages.
