Williams Sisters Sweep Wimbledon
[CHICAGO] — Serena Williams found herself in another Grand Slam final against her most fierce competition: defending Wimbledon champion, sister Venus Williams.
Serena, who has won 11 Grand Slam titles, came out ahead 7-6 (3), 6-2 to win her third Wimbledon Championship with 12 aces and 25 winners. The Williams sisters proved their success at Wimbledon once more by both making it to the finals. Between them, they have eight singles titles this decade. Serena now has an 11-10 edge overall and is 6-2 in Grand Slam finals against her sister. She currently holds three of the major titles—the US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon—and is one Slam win away from tying Billie Jean King at sixth all-time.
“It feels unbelievable to gain a Wimbledon title against the queen of grass,” Serena said after winning against her title defending sister. “We go out with the highest level of competition and leave it all on the court.”
Shortly after the singles championship match, the sisters, with their [K] Blade Team rackets, turned around to defend their doubles title. Serena added the women’s doubles title to her take at this year’s tournament, teaming with big sister Venus to beat Rennae Stubbs and Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-6 (4), 6-4. It’s their fourth Wimbledon title together, part of their collection of nine Grand Slam women’s doubles championships.
“It feels great to win a title with Serena,” said Venus after winning her doubles title. “We work so well on the court, I couldn’t imagine anyone else I’d have on my side.”
