Court Builder David Marsden Wins ASBA ‘Industry Merit Award’

Forest Hill, MD – The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA), the national organization for builders, designers and suppliers of materials for athletic facilities, presented its Industry Merit award to David Marsden, CTCB of Boston Tennis Court Construction Company in Hanover, Mass.
The award, the Association’s highest honor, given in recognition of the combination of professional achievement and service to the industry, was presented at the Association’s recent Technical Meeting in person, in Orlando, Florida.
Marsden has been a member of ASBA since 1986, serving on multiple committees. He has been active in the Association’s voluntary certification program, holding the Certified Tennis Court Builder (CTCB) credential since the 1980s, and was instrumental in helping to rewrite the CTCB exam to bring it into conformance with the standards of a professional testing company. He has also been involved in the review and editing of the Association’s popular publication: Tennis Courts: A Construction and Maintenance Manual. He has served on the Awards Committee, Program Committee and Ethics Committee and been a speaker at the Technical Meeting multiple times throughout the years, and has attended most, if not all, Technical Meetings and Winter Meetings held while he has been a member.
After being elected to the Board of Directors as a representative of the Builder Division, Marsden moved into other leadership roles, including Tennis Division President. He became Chairman of the Association in 2003 and held that position from 2003 to 2005. During his tenure, he was instrumental in helping the Association rebrand, moving away from its old identity as the U.S. Tennis Court & Track Builders Association, and into becoming the American Sports Builders Association, in recognition of its growing work with other sports facilities, including fields and indoor sports venues. Marsden helped guide the transformation, working to convince even the most dubious members of the merits of a stronger, more all-encompassing identity.
Throughout his time with the Association, Marsden has led by example, encouraging others to work together and share their expertise in the interest of creating not just a stronger industry but a better experience for the end users of all facilities.
The Board of Directors unanimously voted on the Industry Merit Award.
“Dave Marsden has been a fixture in this Association for more than 25 years,” said Mark Heinlein, ASBA’s chairman. “During that time, he has helped develop ASBA into what it is today. I can think of no one better suited to receive this award.”
The ASBA is a non-profit association helping designers, builders, owners, operators and users understand quality sports facility construction. The ASBA sponsors informative meetings, publishes newsletters, books and technical construction guidelines for athletic facilities, and keeps its members aware of the latest developments in the industry. It also offers voluntary certification programs in tennis court, running track and sports field construction.
