Tennis Industry encourages players and non-players to join the millions of Americans who hit the tennis courts to enjoy the benefits of the ‘sport for a lifetime.’

ORLANDO, Fla. (April 27, 2021) — As tennis participation surges in the U.S., players and tennis organizations across the country are encouraged to promote May as National Tennis Month—a time to get out on the court and experience the fun, competition and long-term health benefits of the lifetime sport.

The latest research by the Physical Activity Council shows that more than 21.6 million Americans played tennis in 2020, an unprecedented 22 percent increase in participation over 2019 and the highest number of players since the PAC study began in 2007. Importantly, 6.78 million Americans were new and returning players to tennis, and research by the Tennis Industry Association bears that out, as entry-level racquet sales also saw major growth in 2020, up nearly 40 percent. Tennis also has proven to provide tremendous health benefits to those playing the sport. Click here to learn more about the health benefits of tennis.

“Although Americans have been challenged by pandemic restrictions, they clearly see that tennis is exactly what they need to stay active and healthy, and a safe way to have fun with family and friends,” said Michael McNulty, USTA Chairman of the Board and President. “By promoting May as National Tennis Month, we are encouraging even more Americans to get out on the courts and enjoy our great sport.”

For National Tennis Month, players, organizations, facilities, retailers, tennis manufacturers and more are encouraged to promote local programs and activities, at parks and facilities to showcase tennis and spread the word about the sport and its benefits, and to help players and non-players alike find courts and play opportunities in their communities. To show the collective strength behind this awareness campaign, players and providers should share the hashtag #NationalTennisMonth.
