Kiawah Island Golf Resort Announces Barth-Hawtin Tennis Academy
KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (April 3, 2019) - Kiawah Island Golf Resort announces the creation of the Barth-Hawtin Tennis Academy, a world-class program that offers comprehensive development for highly competitive junior tennis players. The new program results from the partnership of The Barth Tennis Academy launched at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in 2015 and Bruce Hawtin, who has helmed the renowned Tennis Academy at River Run Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. for the past 15 years.
Barth-Hawtin Tennis Academy is named for Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s founding Director of Ten-nis, Roy Barth, and his son and current Director, Jonathan Barth, and Bruce Hawtin, a national lead-er in player development. The academy intends to attract junior players who seek success in nation-al, sectional and state-level tournaments while also preparing them for collegiate tennis or the pro tour.
The academy will run year-round. Each week, participants will train at the newly expanded Roy Barth Tennis Center at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which features 19 Har-Tru courts and three hard courts.
“The philosophy of Barth-Hawtin Tennis Academy is simple,” said Hawtin, “Playing world-class tennis depends on establishing world-class fundamentals. Our approach first instills the right pro-cess for establishing tennis fundamentals before we begin thinking about results. Commitment, built upon strong character, is at the heart of our culture, and we will hold each other accountable in those areas every day.”
Barth describes the approach as highly individualistic. “Our coaching focus is to enhance each play-er’s fundamental base and link it to the tactical components of the sport,” said Barth. “Each player will have a personal coach responsible for overseeing their development. We will set goals and milestones for each player, and then focus on the process that will put the player in the best position to achieve those goals.”
Both Barth and Hawtin agree that it is rare for junior players in an academy setting to receive this level of individualized training. The goal is to establish a tennis hub that attracts elite junior players to come for an extended period to receive everything they need in one place to best prepare them for successful collegiate or professional careers.
