Djokovic wins US Open title

New York/USA — HEAD’s Novak Djokovic reached double digits in the Grand Slam trophy race, defeating Roger Federer 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to claim his tenth title at the majors by winning the US Open.

The World No. 1 also captured three Grand Slam trophies - Australia, Wimbledon and New York - and played the finals of all four majors in 2015 for the first time.

Novak Djokovic, who recommends the HEAD Graphene XT Speed, won the opening set while Federer fought back to level at one each. The Serb was able to maintain the edge for the four-set win, even though Federer came back strongly in the last set before finally going down after more than three hours. Djokovic won his 21st match of the season against a fellow top 10 member.

“Roger showed why he’s a champion coming from 5-2 in the fourth set. He made me play until the last point. Fortunately I was able to come up with some big serves in the last game. I have such admiration for Roger,” said Djokovic, “this has been an incredible season, next to 2011 the best of my life. I’m enjoying this one even more as a husband and father. These achievements are incentive for me to keep going.”

The two-time US Open Champion, Novak Djokovic, secured his final with Federer after he overcame fellow HEAD ace and last year’s winner Marin Cilic in the semis. The Croatian, who endorses the HEAD Graphene Prestige, took to the court for the semi-final bothered by an ankle injury. Cilic bravely fought on but Djokovic put on a strong performance and won 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

Cilic remains proud of his accomplishment in the first grand slam title defense of his career. “I will look back very positively to the tournament. Extremely great tournament. Obviously very unlucky that I twisted the ankle, but still with that in a match against Novak, anyway it’s very difficult. Considering the first time experience having to defend a Grand Slam title, I feel that I accomplished well.”

HEAD’s Junior Taylor Fritz, recommending the HEAD Graphene Radical, now owns the boy’s singles US Open title as he beat Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2. Fritz missed a second-set match point but fought back as the rain-interrupted contest went to a deciding set. After beating fellow Racquet Rebel Chung Yunseong 6-2, 6-3 in the semi-finals a dream finally came true for the American boy.

The HEAD pair of Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova reached the final of the women’s doubles against No. 1 seeded Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza who won 6-3, 6-3. The HEAD pair put up a fight at the end, breaking Hingis as she tried to serve out victory but going down a game later. Dellacqua will improve her ranking to fifth in the WTA doubles standings while her partner will stand seventh.

In mixed doubles, evergreen Racquet Rebel Leander Paes, 42, partnered with Martina Hingis to win a third mixed doubles title of the season, recovering from 1-4 down in the final-set championships tiebreak for a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey. Paes is making the most of his long and successful career, winning a ninth mixed doubles trophy and his 17th Grand Slam title.

“If I look at 2015, I feel pretty awesome having won three Grand Slams this year. Other than the French Open, today was the first match we have lost a set. We won the Australian Open without losing a set, which I thought was pretty phenomenal.”

In the quad men’s singles, HEAD’s David Wagner fought his way into the round-robin final, taking a narrow 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 loss to Dylan Alcott. Wagner also earned a title as he and Nicolas Taylor of the US combined to beat HEAD teammate Andy Lapthrone and Alcott 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
