WTA tournament to benefit veterans

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Carlsbad Classic, an inaugural Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 125K Series event, has designated Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station as an official charity partner. The Carlsbad Classic is the newest addition to the WTA 125K Series, debuting November 21-29 at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting injured service members at Camp Pendleton, Naval Medical Center San Diego and Naval Base San Diego. The Carlsbad Classic has also designated November 24 as Military Appreciation Day, offering current and retired service members and their families free admission with valid military I.D. Early arrival is encouraged, as free admission will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached.

Tickets are currently on sale at cldclassic.com. All tickets purchased using the promo code “Warrior20” will be discounted 20%, and 20% of those ticket sales will also be donated to Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station. The community is invited to show their support for San Diego’s military men and women by participating in one of the tournament’s largest fundraisers - a silent auction with all proceeds benefiting the foundation. Taking place on November 24 only, the auction will feature coveted items in all price ranges, including VIP experiences, player-autographed items, tennis memorabilia and collectibles, gift certificates to local attractions and much more. All silent auction proceeds will fund projects such as ultralight wheelchairs, iPads with specialized applications for post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, therapeutic programs and more.

Donations will also support Freedom Station, the foundation’s 12-unit transitional housing facility, which provides injured warriors with the time and resources to successfully transition from military service to civilian life. Silent auctions will take place during both the day session beginning at 10 a.m., and the evening session beginning at 6 p.m.

“San Diego is a proud military town that is home to thousands of members of our Armed Forces,” said Ben Goldsmith, Co-Owner and Tournament Director, Carlsbad Classic. “It is an honor for us to give back to the brave men and women who sacrifice so much to protect our nation. We have seen firsthand the incredible work that Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station is doing to make sure our injured veterans receive the care, love and support they need. We hope tennis enthusiasts from all over Southern California will join us on November 24 to support this worthy cause and enjoy an unforgettable day of professional tennis.”

The Carlsbad Classic takes place November 21-29, 2015 at the Tennis Center at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. The world’s top-ranked female tennis players will compete for a total prize money purse of $125,000 in a 32-player singles main draw, eight-player qualifying draw and eight-team doubles draw. All day and evening sessions will be hosted by American Idol finalist and television personality Kimberly Caldwell. The Carlsbad Classic is one of five WTA 125K Series events scheduled in 2015, joining a lineup that includes tournaments in China, France and Thailand.
