Stephens earns first title
Washington D. C. — HEAD Racquet Rebel Sloane Stephens broke through with her first career title as she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win the Citi Open in Washington. The American, who is ranked 35th and recommends the HEAD Graphene Radical, came through with the win a day after reaching her first final.
Stephens made it all look easy with a 6-1, 6-2 victory: “I just went out there and tried to play the best I could. I executed my game very well - it was just a really good day for me.” said the HEAD player now headed inside the Top 30 once again.
The 22-year-old Stephens was tipped as a breakout player after beating Serena Williams in a Melbourne quarter-final two years ago, but has taken time to develop and mature. “To get to this place, to get to this beautiful trophy, I had to go through a lot, but at the end of the day it was definitely worth it,” she said. Stephens finally came through for her biggest career success after losing six WTA semi-final matches.
In the men’s draw HEAD’s Marin Cilic missed a chance at the final in the American capital as he lost to Kei Nishikori 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 in a re-match of the 2014 US Open final.
