Roddick wins title in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas — Andy Roddick defeated his former Davis Cup captain Jim Courier 6-3 in the one-set tournament final Thursday at the Champions Shootout at the Cedar Park Center, the fifth of 12 events on the 2015 PowerShares Series tennis circuit.
The tournament win was Roddick’s fourth in as many events so far this year on the PowerShares Series, the North American tennis circuit for champion tennis players over the age of 30. Roddick has previously won events this year in Los Angeles, defeating Mark Philippoussis in the final, Lincoln, Neb., defeating James Blake in the final, and Chicago, defeating John McEnroe in the final. He is now 8-0 in matches played so far this season.
Roddick, ironically, was captained by Courier in Davis Cup play in Austin in 2011, when the United States was defeated by Spain 3-1, in what turned out to be Roddick’s Davis Cup finale. To reach the final Thursday in Austin, Roddick defeated Blake 6-3, while Courier defeated McEnroe 7-6 (6) in the four-player tournament.
The 32-year-old Roddick, who has now won six career PowerShares Series events, holds a commanding lead in the PowerShares Series points rankings with 1600 points. Trailing Roddick in the rankings are Salt Lake City champion Mark Philippoussis with 600 points, Blake and Courier with 500 points, McEnroe with 400 points and Andre Agassi with 200 points.
