Alcorta named PTR Male Player of the Year
Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards today during the 2015 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a trade show and tournament, will be held until February 22, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Guillerma Alcorta, of Norman, Oklahoma, has been named the PTR Male Player of the Year. A PTR on Campus member certified in Adult Development, Alcorta played for the University of Oklahoma until he graduated last year.
Also known as Willy, Alcorta was a Top 3 Junior in his native Spain, before heading to the University of Oklahoma, where he played the team’s No. 1 spot. As a Sooner, Alcorta was honored as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, and named the ITA Central Region Player to Watch in his sophomore year.
Coached by John Roddick, Alcorta ended his senior year with a singles record of 28-9, and finished #3 in the NCAA Singles rankings. He helped Oklahoma claim its third consecutive Big 12 title and lead them to the runner up finish at the NCAA Championships, losing to University of Southern California.
In 2014, Willy was All-Big 12, Big 12 Champion at No. 2 Singles and No. 2 Doubles with partner Axel Alvarez, who is currently a junior at Oklahoma. Also that year, Willy was named ITA All-American (singles) and ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year. Willy joined as a PTR on Campus member and is certified in Adult Development.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 15,000 members in 125 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
