Djokovic crowns season with 3rd No. 1
London/Great Britain — Novak Djokovic ended his 2014 season with a third straight title at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London after Roger Federer withdrew from the finals due to a back injury. Djokovic had another record-setting season, after claiming the year-end world No. 1 honors for a third year in a row.
Djokovic, who endorses the HEAD Graphene Speed, becomes the seventh player in ATP history (since 1973) to finish three separate seasons at the tournament. “I’m happy to stand here with this trophy after my season this year. I have plenty of joy even if it’s not the way you would want things to end. Roger is one of the greatest in our sport and I know that if he could have played, he would have done so.”
Djokovic officially clinched the top ranking with a perfect 3-0 group record as he beat fellow HEAD player Tomas Berdych in his final group match. “It’s a great deal of happiness knowing that what I’ve been through the entire season in order to get to where I am and finish the year as number one,” said Djokovic.
Djokovic was making his eighth consecutive appearance at the year-end event and became the first player to win the season ending tournament three times in a row since Ivan Lendl achieved the feat from 1985-87. The Serb also won the title in 2008.
In the doubles competition HEAD player Ivan Dodig and partner Marcelo Melo were fighting hard against No. 1 seeded Bryan Brothers, but ended with 2nd place after the match tie-break 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-10. Dodig, who endorses the HEAD Graphene Speed and Melo were the first Croat and the first Brazilian to enter the doubles final at this tournament.
