Aviators sign Daniela Hantuchová

February 12, 2014

Five-time Grand Slam champion, Daniela Hantuchová, was drafted in the Mylan World TeamTennis Marquee Draft yesterday by the San Diego Aviators for the July season. She will join the world number one men’s doubles team, Mike and Bob Bryan, for the 2014 season making the Aviators one of the strongest teams in WTT.

Hantuchova turned pro in 1999 and had a career breakthrough in 2002 in defeating Martina Hingis for the WTA title in the Indian Wells Masters. Since then she has accumulated 15 more WTA titles, five Grand Slam championships and has beaten nearly every top women player on the tour.

“Daniela will be an incredible asset to our team. She is an accomplished singles and doubles player, and combined with the Bryan Brothers, we are well positioned for a great season,” said Russell Geyser, San Diego Aviators owner.

In addition to her tennis career, Hantuchova has a very successful modeling career including features in ESPN Magazine.

Mylan WTT’s Marquee Draft was held Tuesday. The Aviators had first pick due to the previous franchise’s last place standing in 2013. Additional players will be selected by the Aviators on March 11 in the Roster Draft in order to fill out their roster.

The Aviators were recently purchased by local businessman, Russell Geyser, and will be joining the other Mylan WTT teams in Las Vegas; Boston; Springfield, Mo.; Philadelphia; Austin; Irving, Texas; and Washington, D.C.

Other top players taken in the draft include Andy Roddick by the Austin Aces, Martina Hingis and Venus Williams by the Washington Kastles, and Sam Querrey by the Las Vegas Neon. All Marquee Drafts results are available on the Mylan WTT webite.

The 39th Mylan WTT season is July 6 through July 27 concluding with the Mylan WTT Finals. The Aviators will play 14 regular season matches, with seven at its home venue, the Valley View Casino Center, formerly the San Diego Sports Arena, and seven on the road.
