Sunglasses for kids and sports

January 15, 2013

Children spend a lot of time outdoors playing sports, exposing their eyes to serious sun damage, possibly even irreversible vision loss or blindness. Ninety percent of total lifetime damage from the sun’s harmful rays occurs by age 18. Therefore — along with the protective sunscreen, helmets, pads and guards — it’s crucial to include sunglasses as part of any child’s sports safety gear.

The Real Kids Shades line of Xtreme Gear sunglasses for kids from birth to age 12 offer 100% UV-A and UV-B ultraviolet ray protection. All of the Xtreme Gear shades are safe, lead-free, impact-resistant and shatterproof, with wraparound designs that minimize exposure to peripheral light and foam-backed frames that prevent sand, sweat and sunscreen from getting into kids’ eyes. The Xtreme Gear line is perfect for children taking part in all types of sports from baseball, soccer, and tennis to biking, rollerblading, wakeboarding and more. Winter sports like skiing, sledding and snowboarding are no exception, as the reflection from snow can intensify the sun’s damaging rays. Xtreme Gear shades are comfortable and stylish and created to stay put even during active sports. The Xtreme Gear line features four designs:

Xtreme Elements feature a comfortable, adjustable neoprene headband in a variety of fun patterns and colors. They have impact-resistant polycarbonate frames and shatterproof UV400 category-3 lenses. The neoprene band makes them float — a big plus for boating and water sports — and the included Microfiber sleeve protects and cleans the shades. Xtreme Elements are available in navy and pink in a 0-36 months size, and blue flame, lavender cheetah, pink gogo, silver, lavender, light blue, navy, red and white for 3-7 years, and retail for $19.99.

Xtreme Sports are perfect for very active kids, featuring durable, wraparound polycarbonate frames with anti-fog vents as well as patented mesh-lined adjustable neoprene bands. They also float, making them great for kayaking, waterskiing and other water sports. The 3-7 years size has UV400 category-3 shatterproof polycarbonate lenses and the 7-12 years size has polarized lenses. Both sizes are available in black/blue, black/silver, black/red, black/pink, black/purple, black, lavender, light blue and navy and retail for $19.99.

Xtreme Chill shades are also made of durable and lightweight Performance Xylex frames with UV 400 Category-3 Revo lenses. They are Rx-able and feature safe, rubber tipped arrow temples and a contemporary wraparound design. Xtreme Chill sunglasses are designed for ages 7-12 in red, white or blue colors that retail for $34.99.

The unique Xtreme Convertible shades have patented Quick-Lock Tabs to easily convert them from traditional temples to sports bands in seconds — the only kids’ sunglasses to offer this type of versatility. The lightweight frames are made from Performance Xylex which is both flexible and durable. The lenses are shatterproof polycarbonate UV400 Category-3 Revo, and can also be fitted with a prescription. Designed for ages 7-12, the shades are available in four great sporty colors: blue, red, silver or white, and are suggested to retail for $39.99.

Real Kids Shades offer 100% UV protection, as measured by the strictest American, European and Australian governing bodies and are Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) compliant, CE Certified and FDA Approved for protecting children’s eyes against dangerous exposure to UV-A and UV-B rays. Real Kids Shades are approved by the Melanoma International Foundation and meets with the sunglass recommendations of Prevent Blindness America.
