Federer sets record for weeks at No. 1
CHICAGO — Wilson career player and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer set a new all-time record today by becoming the first male tennis player to hold the world no. 1 ranking for 300 weeks total. Federer, age 31, reached this milestone with a Wilson tennis racket in hand for every minute played at no. 1.
“This is a significant achievement for me, and I feel so privileged for the opportunities I have been given throughout my playing career,” said Federer. “Today, I feel proud and enormously thankful to my fans, my family and my support team.”
Earlier this year, Federer surpassed Pete Sampras’ record for most weeks atop of the ATP World Tour. As he reached the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters, defeating Wawrinka 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 in the third round, he set himself apart as the only man in the history of the sport of tennis to accomplish such a sustained level of play.
“We whole-heartedly congratulate Roger on this deserved and historic achievement,” said Jon Muir, general manager of Wilson Racquet Sports. “He is a true icon; we take pride and pleasure in working with an athlete of his caliber and character.”
Playing with his Wilson Pro Staff 90 racket, Federer reclaimed the world no. 1 ranking last July, after his historic 17th Grand Slam title win, defeating Murray in the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s final. Federer has won six ATP titles this year.
