Anderson Named PTR Professional of the Year
Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) will present its annual awards this week during the 2012 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 50-plus on court and classroom presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a tennis trade show and tournament is being held February 24-28, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, in Orlando, Florida
Kirk Anderson, of New Fairfield, Connecticut, was presented PTR’s coveted Professional of the Year Award.
Anderson is the Department Director for Coach Education and Development at the USTA. The department provides services and resources to coaches and tennis leaders throughout the country who are involved with recruiting new players and retaining them in local programs. The department has conducted on court training workshops for more than 69,000 coaches since 2000.
One of only a few Master Professionals for both PTR and USPTA, Anderson has a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Masters in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University. He is a graduate of the USTA High Performance Coach program and is certified as a Youth Fitness Specialist by the International Youth Conditioning Association.
Anderson has published dozens of tennis articles in journals in the United States and internationally. He wrote Learn To Rally and Play - A Coaches’ Guide, USA Tennis 1-2-3 Adult Program Guide, USA Tennis 1-2-3 Curriculum for Kids, Coaching Youth Tennis, Coaching Tennis - Technical and Tactical Skills and A Parents Guide for Ten and Under Tennis. He developed the Coaching Youth Tennis online course. He participated in the production and was featured in three videos: USTA’s Teaching Group Tennis, USTA’s Backboard Tennis and Games Approach to Coaching Tennis.
Since 2000, Anderson has served on the ITF Tennis Participation Task Force, and is a member of the Special Olympics International Global Resource Tennis Team and the Special Olympics North America Tennis Development Committee. He is also on the National Tennis Advisory Staff for both Head and the adidas.
A popular presenter at international, national, regional and local workshops, Anderson is best known for his innovative and energetic style with large groups. He was a featured speaker at two ITF Tennis Participation Coaches Workshops held in England. In 2003, Anderson received the International Tennis Hall of Fame Educational Merit Award, and in 2006, was named Person of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry Magazine.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 14,000 members in 117 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
