USTA Eastern to Hold College Showcase Day
White Plains, NY — High school students will get a chance to show off their powerful strokes and strong footwork, and learn about often overlooked opportunities to play college tennis from coaches at USTA Eastern’s 24th Annual College Showcase Day.
The Showcase, which will be held Nov. 7, 2010 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, is designed to reach the thousands of students who are not recruited by the top college tennis teams, but want to play tennis after graduation.
This year, high school juniors will get a chance to participate in drills, attend special workshops, and watch some of the top college players in the country compete at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the National Tennis Center. High school seniors will play in a round robin tournament, have lunch with college coaches and attend a College Showcase.
“The College Showcase is a great opportunity for students who want to play on a college tennis team, but don’t know where, or how to get there,” said Julie Bliss, Director of Competition and Player Development for USTA Eastern. “And the goal is for students to learn about the opportunities that are out there, and get noticed by college coaches looking to build their teams.”
Last year, more than 200 students and parents attended the Showcase, along with coaches from more than 45 colleges, including Swarthmore College, University of Scranton and Smith College. This year, a wide range of colleges have already signed up, including Bucknell University, University of Rochester and Manhattanville College.
Coaches and high school students interested in attending the showcase can register at eastern.usta.com. For more information, contact Julie Bliss, Director of Player Development/Junior Competition at 914-697-2229 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
