Southern Jr. Team Tennis Section Championships
Kids enjoyed a fantastic 2010 USTA Jr. Team Tennis Southern Section Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. August 20-22. Besides the competition and great food, players enjoyed a festival in an air-conditioned tent with free games and snacks along with outdoor inflatable ball toss stations.
North Carolina led the states with two champions and a finalist while Georgia had two teams win titles. Four teams in the 18-and-under and 14-and-under intermediate and advanced categories earned the right to represent USTA Southern in the National Championships in Surprise, AZ in October.
Eight Southern Juniors Win National Titles
Shelby Rogers, of Daniel Island, SC, captured the USTA Girls’ 18s National Hard Court Championship singles title, and will receive a singles wild card entries into the women’s main draws of the 2010 US Open.
Nathan Pasha, of Atlanta, Lauren Herring, Greenville, NC, and Grace Min, Duluth, GA, also received wild cards into the US Open main draw with their victories in the doubles of the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ National Hard Court Championships.
Kaitlyn McCarthy, 12, of Cary, NC, swept the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Girls’ 12s National Championships. McCarthy, seeded No. 5, upset top seed Sofia Kenin of Pembroke Pines, FL, 6-4, 6-0, in the final, and partnered with Kenya Jones of Memphis, TN, to win the doubles title.
