Campbell's Championships news, Wednesday
NEWPORT, R.I. — In today’s first match on Center Court, No. 5 seed Mardy Fish advanced to his fourth quarter-final showing in Newport, after defeating India’s Somdev Devvarman in straight sets. Jamaican Dustin Brown was a star of the day, winning the biggest match of his career when he upset No. 1 seed and world No. 19 Sam Querrey, 6-4, 6-3. All eyes were on the court for the final singles match of the day, which pinned the two young American wild cards 18-year-old Ryan Harrison and 17-year-old Denis Kudla against each other for the opportunity to advance to their first quarter-final match. Harrison overcame Kudla and at 18 years, 2 months, he became the youngest player in tournament history (since 1977) to reach the quarter-finals in Newport.
On Thursday, Dustin Brown of Jamaica will meet Brian Dabul of Argentina in the first quarter-final of the day. Both players are attempting to advance to their first career ATP World Tour semi-final. Following that match, No. 4 seed Olivier Rochus of Belgium will attempt to reach the semi-finals at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships for the second straight year on Thursday as he takes on South African qualifier Raven Klaasen for the first time.
Looking to the weekend, action at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships will be complemented by the annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and a Hall of Fame Classic Exhibition Match.
The Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 10 at 12:30 p.m. Doubles stars dominate the Recent Player and Master Player categories, with the selections of Gigi Fernandez & Natasha Zvereva, Todd Woodbridge & Mark Woodforde, and Owen Davidson. In the Contributor category, wheelchair tennis creator Brad Parks has been selected for induction, along with Derek Hardwick, who was instrumental in the creation of Open tennis. On Sunday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m., Woodforde, Davidson, Fernandez and Zvereva will take to the courts for the Hall of Fame Classic Exhibition Match. Tickets for the Induction Ceremony, the Hall of Fame Classic and the Semi-Final and Final Rounds of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships are available at the box office, on tennisfame.com or by calling 866-914-FAME (3263).
Following are Wednesday’s results and the Order of Play for Thursday, July 8.
