Campbell's Championships news, final
NEWPORT, R.I. — Mardy Fish captured his fourth ATP World Tour win at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships for the Van Alen Cup in Newport on Sunday. Fish fired 24 aces past No. 4 seed Olivier Rochus of Belgium for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory in two hours and four minutes. The victory will advance Fish about 20 spots to No. 59 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings on Monday. The victory was Fish’s first grass court title, rounding out his list of victories which already included all other surfaces.
“It’s a great tournament and I enjoy coming here. It means a lot to win here. It means a lot to win now on every surface in my career - indoor, outdoor, hard, clay and grass,” said Fish. “I’ve certainly lost a lot of heartbreak finals, and it feels good to win one,” said Fish.
During the course of the week, Fish has regularly cited his fitness as an enabler to his success. In recent months, he dropped 30 pounds in weight due to a strict diet and training regime. Last month he finished runner-up to Sam Querrey at the AEGON Championships, another ATP World Tour 250 grass-court tournament, in London.
“In that spot and that atmosphere, it was tough to swallow,” Fish said of the loss at the Queen’s Club. “I wanted to play this match on my own terms, figure out a way to win it or lose it on my racquet.”
In doubles action, the big-serving Australian duo of Carsten Ball and Chris Guccione captured their first ever ATP World Tour title by defeating Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Travis Rettenmaier of Los Angeles. Ball and Guccione upset top seeds Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey in the first round and went on to drop just one set in the remainder of the week.
“It feels great. Carsten and I have had some really good results before, but this was our best result in a Tour event and it feels great to get the win,” said Guccione. “Hopefully, we’ll keep on going up.”
