4 Juniors Win Novo Nordisk Scholarships
New York, NY - Kelsey Aho, 18, of Marietta, Ga., and Melanie Nolt, 19, of Manheim, Pa., have been named the 2010 Novo Nordisk Donnelly Award national recipients. Aho and Nolt, who are both tennis standouts with Type I Diabetes, will each receive a $5,000 scholarship to be used for education, tennis development, and/or medical care.
The duo will be presented with the award at halftime of the July 14 World TeamTennis match between the Philadelphia Freedoms and the New York Sportimes in New York City. The match features two American tennis greats, Andy Roddick who will play for Philadelphia and the Sportimes’ leader John McEnroe. Per Falk of Novo Nordisk will make the presentation along with WTT co-founder Billie Jean King and the namesakes of the award - Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby.
Garrett Jensen, 18, of Portland, Ore., and Lauren Stauffer, 16, of Lititz, Pa., will also receive regional finalist scholarship awards of $2,500.
The Novo Nordisk Donnelly Awards annually distribute $15,000 in scholarships, including two one-time $5,000 scholarships given to two young people, ages 12-21, who have diabetes and play tennis competitively in tournaments or on their school team.
King, through WTT Charities, established the scholarship program in 1998 to encourage children with diabetes to lead an active life and compete in tennis. The Novo Nordisk Donnelly Awards are named after two long-time World TeamTennis executives, tennis champions, and sisters Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby. Stone was an All-American and NCAA doubles champion at Northwestern University, and Maltby earned All-Big Ten honors at the University of Iowa. Both women have lived successfully with diabetes since childhood. For more information, visit www.WTT.com.
Novo Nordisk, a world leader in diabetes care, has been the title sponsor of the award since 2002.
