Playoffs to set Roland Garros U.S. Wild Cards
The USTA is hosting a playoff this week to award a men’s and a women’s singles main draw wild card to the 2010 French Open. The men’s and women’s wild card tournaments will take place on the clay courts of the Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla., April 27-29. The USTA and the French Tennis Federation have a reciprocal agreement in which wild card entries into the main draw at the 2010 French Open and 2010 US Open are exchanged.
Eight players will compete for the women’s wild card: Julia Boserup, 18, of Boca Raton, Fla.; Beatrice Capra, 18, of Ellicott City, Md.; Jamie Hampton, 20, of Auburn, Ala.; Christina McHale, 17, of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; Asia Muhammad, 19, of Henderson, Nev.; Alison Riske, 19, of McMurray, Pa.; Sloane Stephens, 17, of San Pedro, Calif.; and CoCo Vandeweghe, 18, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
Eight players are scheduled to compete for the men’s wild card: Bjorn Fratangelo, 16, of Naples, Fla.; Ryan Harrison, 17, of Bradenton, Fla.; Alex Kuznetsov, 23, of Tampa, Fla.; Jesse Levine, 22 of Boca Raton, Fla.; Tim Smyczek, 22, of Hales Corner, Wis.; Ryan Sweeting, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Donald Young, 20, of Atlanta.
The eighth spot will be filled by either 16-year-old Spencer Newman of Palmetto Bay, Fla., or 16-year-old Jeremy Efferding of Lake Worth Fla. Newman and Efferding are both full-time residents of the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., and are competing today for the final spot.
Both tournaments will be in a knock-out format, the seedings of which will be determined by today’s ATP World Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA rankings.
Harrison and Vandeweghe won similar events last December to earn main draw wild cards into the 2010 Australian Open, while John Isner and Lauren Embree won main draw wild cards into the2009 French Open at the Boca West Country Club.
