Americans Outstanding at Senior Championships
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — American players posted strong showings in virtually all age groups at the 30th ITF Seniors World Team Championships hosted by Tennis Mexico from March 29 - April 3, in Mexico City, Mexico. The 10 U.S. teams, playing in men’s and women’s age groups from 35 to 55-plus, claimed five first-place finishes at this premier international team competition. All 10 United States teams finished in the top four of their respective competitions, also claiming one runner-up, two third-place, and two fourth-place finishes.
The U.S. successfully defended titles in three of the 10 divisions at the event, including the Margaret Court Cup (W45), the Maureen Connolly Cup (W55) and the Fred Perry Cup (M50). Other first-place teams included the Young Cup (W40) and Maria Bueno Cup (W50). The final tally was five Cups to the U.S. and two Cups to France, who finished second overall to the U.S. in the tournament.
One of the greatest U.S. victories this year was a win over top-seeded Great Britain in the Maria Esther Bueno Cup (W50) final. The Americans had won the Bueno Cup five of the last six years, losing to Great Britain in 2009. This year, the U.S. regained the Bueno Cup as Susan Wright (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Diane Fishburne (Charleston, S.C.) posted straight-sets victories over Anthea Stewart and Christine French of Great Britain. The ITF Seniors World Team Championships is the top team event on the ITF Seniors circuit. Since its inception in 1981, the number of competitors attracted to this event has increased each year. In 1993, the ITF took the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups - Seniors (35 to 55-plus) and Super-Seniors (60 to 80-plus for men and 60 to 75-plus for women).
