ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award winners and ITA All-Star Team to be honored
*SKILLMAN, N.J. — * The 2009 ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winners and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Star Team, which features the nation’s top-ranked players from the 2009 season will be treated by the ITA and United States Tennis Association (USTA) to a weekend in New York, highlighted by activities during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Saturday, August 29th.
These remarkable student-athletes are to be honored during a luncheon in the USTA President’s Suite during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess. Chairman of the Board and President of the USTA Lucy Garvin, ITA Executive Director David A Benjamin, David Dinkins, former Mayor of New York City and a member of the USTA Board of Directors, are among those on hand to present the awards.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men’s and women’s players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. The 2009 recipients include:
MEN WOMEN Division I: Blake Strode - Arkansas Division I: Dunja Antunovic - DePaul
Division II: Vincent Nguyen - UC San Diego Division II: Ina Dan - UC San Diego
Division III: Dustin Phillips - UT-Tyler Division III: Karina Pikhart - MIT NAIA: Jonatan Berhane - Lewis & Clark State NAIA: Sara Allison Winters - Martin Methodist
JuCo: Elliott Clark - Meridian CC JuCo: Kelly Elizabeth Sterling - Meridian CC
This 26th edition of the ITA Collegiate All-Star Team includes the nation’s top-ranked men’s and women’s tennis players from the season-ending Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and NJCAA levels, as well as champions from the 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and 2009 NCAA Championships. Highlighting this year’s team are the Campbell/ITA National Players of the Year: Mallory Cecil of Duke and Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State.
The following ITA women’s All-Stars will join Cecil: Mari Andersson of California, Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame, Jana Juricova of California, Renata Kucerkova of Fresno State, Lorne McManigle of Emory, Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, Maria Mosolova of Northwestern, Sona Novakova of Armstrong Atlantic State, Jillian O’Neill of Hillsborough CC, Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State, Delia Sescioreanu of Auburn-Montgomery and Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame.
Along with Nedovyesov, the other men’s ITA All-Stars to be honored are: Devin Britton of Mississippi, Steve Forman of Wake Forest, Michael Goodwin of Emory, Alex Grubin of Concordia (N.Y.), Dominic Inglot of Virginia, Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State, Florian Lemke of Vanguard, Cory Parr of Wake Forest, Davey Sandgren of Tennessee, Moacir Santos of Laredo CC, Michael Shabaz of Virginia and John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee.
