Philippoussis Will Defend Title at 2007 Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships
NEWPORT, RI — The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced today that Australian Mark Philippoussis, star of NBC’s new reality dating series “Age of Love,” will defend his title at the 2007 Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, July 9-15 in Newport, Rhode Island. Played for the Van Alen Cup, the tournament is the only ATP event in North America played on grass.
Philippoussis will be making his third appearance on the legendary grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Sidelined since January after injuring his right knee during the Hopman Cup, Philippoussis has been training in Las Vegas with Andre Agassi’s strength coach Gil Reyes, and has designated Newport as his comeback tournament.
Known for his serve and volley prowess and his success on grass, Philippoussis won the 2006 Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships over American Justin Gimelstob. Throughout the entire week Philippoussis was unstoppable, winning every service game while shooting 64 aces in the tournament.
Since turning pro in 1994, Philippoussis has captured 11 career singles titles and in 2003 he finished the year with a career-high ranking of No. 9 in the world. He was the runner-up at the 1998 US Open (to Patrick Rafter) and at Wimbledon in 2003 (to Roger Federer) and has also been a Wimbledonquarterfinalist three times (1998, 1999, 2000). In Davis Cup action, Philippoussis has been a member of the Australian Davis Cup team, competing in 13 ties with a 13-10 singles record. He was also a member of the winning Australian Davis Cup teams in 1999 and 2003.
Philippoussis will also be in the spotlight of NBC’s upcoming reality dating series “Age of Love” premiering Monday, June 18 (9-10 p.m. ET/PT). The new series features a timely, diverse twist on the reality dating show format, with the 30-year-old Philippoussis attempting to find love among women ranging in age from 21-48 in this unique reality series.
